Description

Job Summary

We are looking for a set designer or artist, based in London, who is interested in collaborating on an outdoor art installation and physical theatre project called 'Church Street Goes Wild', produced by The Cockpit, as part of Inside Out, Westminster’s free outdoor arts festival.

Job Description

With the aim of facilitating time and space for people to get creative, have fun, and reflect on their connection to nature, over the first three Sundays in August, we will work with members of the community to create a temporary art installation, full of crafted plants, animals and fungi, as if nature were reclaiming the triangle on Church Street, culminating in a performance on the fourth Sunday.

The first part of the project is to design an outdoor art installation / set design that can be easily made by members of the public and the creative team. Then on 3 consecutive Sundays in August we will host the making days outside in the triangle on Church Street (in the foyer of The Cockpit theatre if there is bad weather). We will set up tables, provide materials and simple instructions for anyone passing by to join in creating and constructing parts of the installation (and potentially puppets for the performance) e.g. small plants and animals using arts and crafts. And we still start to fill the triangle with our community made art installation. Each Sunday it will grow and take over more of the space and we will clear it away at the end of the day.

For the second part of the project, commencing the week of the 17th August, we will work with a new composition and 3 performers to create a 15-30 minute physical theatre piece to be performed in the full installation on Sunday 23rd August.
