Job Description

Attenborough Arts Centre is currently seeking 2 freelance artists across 2 different disciplines to join our learning team for 6 months as artists in residence. In response to consultation with children and their families, we are inviting proposals from dance/music and visual artists looking to create and deliver inclusive and exciting workshops for children and young people with complex needs and disabilities and their families, particularly those who are able to work in an interdisciplinary way.

Context

Attenborough Arts Centres Inclusive Youth Arts Programme (IYAP) provides much needed opportunities for children and young people with complex needs and disabilities to be creative outside of school, promoting their wellbeing and enjoyment of being with others. All our workshops and performances are free to people from Leicester and Leicestershire who register on our programme.

Our programme takes place at weekends and during school holidays. Children on our programme have lived experience of disabilities and complex needs that require a range of sensory and person-centred approaches so they can participate in the arts: including but not limited to PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties), Autism, ADHD (Attention Deficiency Hyperactive Disorder), Auditory, speech and visual impairments, Down's Syndrome and Global Developmental Delay.

We have two strands to the programme:

  • ART explorers for under 18s
  • pARTicipate for 18-25s

Job Requirements

We are seeking artists that are open and collaborative, able to design process focused activity with multiple entry points to ensure inclusive access for all participants.

Our participants have requested a range of art forms including, dance, music and visual art. They would also like sensory play sessions and sessions taking place outdoors. We welcome applications from artists who are able to work across disciplines and combine art forms.

Workshops can be linked to, and inspired by our wider programme. This includes the exhibitions in our galleries, theatre/what's on programme and other festivals and events.

We are seeking artists who are open to working collaboratively with the project coordinator to design sessions which respond to the needs of our families.

Fees and commitment

  • Minimum commitment of 5 full days of work (divided up over different times and days), with scope to extend
  • Timeframe: October 2025 - April 2026
  • Artist fees £300 per day

Total fee: £1,500*

Job Responsibilities

We would like the chosen artist/s to work with both the under and over 18s age group.

  • Artists may be asked to design sessions for those under 10, those aged between 10-17 or need specific sessions such as sessions for those with PMLD or sessions designed for Autistic young people.
  • Experience working with children and young people with complex needs is essential and it is important to demonstrate knowledge of how to differentiate for multiple and complex access and communication needs.
  • Session times and lengths vary and are dependent on the specific project and needs of different groups. Session length and content will be discussed with the project coordinator in advance and we seek artists which are willing to have a flexible approach to the way they design sessions.
