The Gardener will support the Head Gardener in maintaining the gardens and outdoor spaces at Charleston's Firle and Lewes sites. This is a varied role covering the care, presentation and day-to-day management of Charleston's gardens and outdoor areas. It would suit an experienced gardener who can balance practical horticultural work with public-facing responsibilities. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in heritage gardening and horticulture, alongside enthusiasm for contemporary, environmentally sensitive practices. They should be comfortable working outdoors in all weather, have good horticultural knowledge, and work well as part of a friendly team. The role includes working in public areas throughout the year. Experience of supporting or supervising volunteers would be useful. Reporting to: Head Gardener We're looking for an experienced, organised and proactive gardener with strong practical horticultural skills and the ability to work independently. You'll have at least two years' professional gardening experience, excellent communication skills, and a creative, hands-on approach to maintaining beautiful outdoor spaces. An interest in historic gardens, conservation and sustainable gardening practices is important, while horticultural qualifications and experience using and maintaining garden machinery are desirable. You should also be comfortable working outdoors in all weather and carrying out physically demanding tasks. You'll help maintain Charleston's historic gardens and outdoor spaces, carrying out a wide range of horticultural tasks including planting, pruning, propagation, lawn care and seasonal maintenance. The role also involves supporting volunteers, engaging with visitors, preparing floral displays, maintaining tools and nursery stock, and helping manage the gardens using sustainable, organic principles. You'll work closely with the Head Gardener while supporting events and collaborating with colleagues across the organisation as needed.
