Events Host (Freelance Work in the City of London)

Salary: £13.85 per hour (London Living Wage), shift minimum is 3-hours.
Hours: 2 shifts per week on average- if weekday evening, generally 6pm-9pm or if weekend the average shift is 12pm to 11pm. This can vary as it depends on the organiser who books the church or on the event that is taking place.

About the Role

You will ensure the smooth running of events, from concerts, recitals, and workshops to corporate and community gatherings, fashion shows, exhibitions, and receptions. St Mary-at-Hill has two major annual events for which you will be expected to be available, which are the Fish Harvest Festival on the second Sunday of October and the Carol Service in December.

Responsibilities include:

  • Event hosting: Open and close the church, assisting the organisers and making them feel comfortable, welcoming guests, and serve as the main point of contact.
  • Event setup and takedown: Prepare the space, assist with equipment, manage seating, and ensure tidy handover.
  • Customer service: Answer guest questions, provide directions, and create a warm, professional atmosphere.
  • Logistics support: Operate basic equipment, such as sound systems and lighting, and manage seating and other setups as required.
  • Problem-solving: Address any challenges during evens and handle on-site issues calmly and effectively.
  • Basic maintenance: Small tasks such as tidying, cleaning up, and occasional light bulb changes.

Job Requirements

  • Dependable, friendly, and confident with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience in customer service or events is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, managing event setup and takedown and ensuring the space is organized.
  • Familiarity with basic sound and lighting equipment, and knowledge of how to use sound systems or a willingness to learn.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the capacity to handle unexpected issues calmly.
  • Reliable, punctual, and flexible to work evening and weekend shifts.
  • Interest in historic venues and preserving their atmosphere is a plus.
  • Must be available for a minimum of two events per month.
  • Must have or be willing to undergo a Basic DBS check.
  • Role is subject to the right to work in the UK.

  • Emergency Preparedness: Be aware of emergency protocols and act accordingly in case of an emergency to ensure the safety of all attendees.
  • Basic Maintenance: Perform tasks such as cleaning up, changing light bulbs, and ensuring the venue is well-maintained.
