Development Manager (maternity cover) at Charleston

Reporting to: Head of Development
Contract: Fixed Term - Maternity Cover
Salary: £27,700 - £33,800
Hours: 35 hours per week
Location: Charleston in Firle (BN8 6LL) and Charleston Lewes (BN7 1FB)

About Charleston

Charleston brings people together to engage with art and ideas across our two sites in Firle and Lewes. The modernist home and studio of the painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, Charleston was a gathering point for some of the 20th century's most radical artists and writers known collectively as the Bloomsbury group.

About the role
The role plays an important part in maintaining and growing Charleston's
fundraised income. It focuses on looking after donor and funder relationships,ensuring good stewardship, and delivering funding applications and reports on time.


You will work closely with the Head of Development and will be supported by the Development Assistant, particularly with the day-to-day administration of memberships and events. Clear priorities will be agreed, with a focus on maintaining momentum and quality across key fundraising work.

Job Requirements

Essential skills and experience

  • Experience of fundraising in one or more of the following areas: charitable
  • trusts and foundations, major donors or memberships.
  • Strong written communication skills, with experience of writing funding
  • applications or donor communications.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage several priorities at the same time.
  • Experience of stewarding donors and building positive relationships.
  • Confidence working independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience using CRM systems or fundraising databases.

Desirable skills

  • Experience working in the arts, culture or heritage sector.
  • Experience managing or supporting membership schemes.
  • Knowledge of Gift Aid and related compliance.
  • Experience planning or supporting donor or member events.
