Job Summary

We are looking for an designer-artist-maker or artist collective to design and refurbish a space for the Waterside Food Project in Blackfield, New Forest.

Job Description

Project Overview

We are looking for an designer-artist-maker or artist collective to design and refurbish a space for the Waterside Food Project at the back of The Store in Blackfield, New Forest. The space will function as a pilot project to test if it will work as a Creative Hub for local residents to participate in creative activities, for fun and wellbeing, with an emphasis on recycling.

Location: The Store (to be re-named Lucie's Place), 153 Hampton Lane, Blackfield, SO45 1WE

Leased & Managed by: New Forest Aquaponics / Waterside Food Project

Commissioner: Culture in Common hosted by Energise Me, the Creative People and Places project for the New Forest, funded by Arts Council England

Fee & Budget: £10,000 (to cover all design, fabrication, installation, materials, and associated costs)

About the Project

Following an Ideas Workshop with local residents of Blackfield and Langley in January 2025, a brief has been put together which responds to the 'look and feel' and activity ideas suggested for the space. The commission seeks a designer-artist-maker or artist collective to design and decorate this temporary space, creating bespoke furniture from recycled materials and other interior elements that reflect the community's vision and needs for the space.

The commission fee for this project is £10,000. This is inclusive of all costs associated with design, artist fees, materials, fabrication, transport, accommodation, and installation. We are hoping that most materials might be entirely free if they are all re-cycled and the Waterside Food Project can help to source these materials.

Job Requirements

The opportunity is open to both local and national artists and would suit Theatre Designers and Artisans as much as Interior Designer-Makers. The selection will be based on:

  • Quality and relevance of previous work.
  • Response to the brief and understanding of the project's aims.
  • Feasibility within the available budget and timescale.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with local communities and volunteers.

Applicants must hold:

  • £5 million Public Liability Insurance
  • £1 Million Professional Indemnity Insurance
  • A Current DBS check
