Description

Job Summary

We are seeking creative submissions for three temporary installations in a disused, iconic K6 telephone box in the village of Damerham in the New Forest, transforming it into a vibrant art space that engages both locals and visitors.

Job Description

Project Overview

Similar to Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth, this opportunity invites three artists (or artist collectives) to develop temporary installations to be displayed in the phone box between July 2025 and March 2026. The three works will be selected by the Damerham community and should reflect a sense of 'place'.

Who Can Apply

This opportunity is open to all artists, working individually or collaboratively, in any medium (please note that the phone box has no electricity, so any digital/electronic works must include their own power source). We welcome applications from artists of all backgrounds and lived experiences. If you have any access needs, please let us know how we can support you.

Key Project Details

  • Location: Damerham, Hampshire, SP6 3HD.
  • Community Selection: Each of the three works will be chosen by a selection panel of community representatives and will be selected based on artistic quality, relevance to Damerham's sense of place, potential for community involvement, and feasibility within the available budget and practical constraints.
  • Community Engagement: Though not essential, artworks developed involving some form of community engagement are welcomed, for instance through workshops with targeted groups, oral history collection, community walks etc.
  • Viewer Interaction: We welcome submissions for works that invite some form of viewer interaction and encourage longer viewing, for instance a crank handle to create power, levers to move elements, responsive digital creations, listening posts or similar.
  • Sustainable and seasonal: We welcome artists that have considered sustainability and/or artworks that involve a seasonal element.
  • Commissioned by: This project is delivered as a partnership between Culture in Common and Damerham Parish Council.
  • The fee for each of the three commissions is £2,000. This fee is to cover R&D, community engagement, construction, materials, transport, accommodation, and installation costs.
