Job Summary

Brass Bands England are seeking individuals with experience working with young people to adjudicate the National Youth Brass Band Championships (Youth Champs) next April.

Job Description

Youth Champs 2027 takes place at King Edward's School, Birmingham on Saturday 17 April 2027, and we are seeking up to eight highly charismatic, engaging and musically skilled individuals to adjudicate the four sections of the contest.

All adjudication at Youth Champs is open: adjudicators are visible in the hall and give public verbal feedback to every band at the end of their section. No numerical scores are used. Instead, each band receives a Certificate of Achievement level - Gold, Silver, Bronze or Merit - to reflect the standard of its performance, alongside placings and Best Soloist awards in the competitive sections. Bands submit digital copies of all scores in advance, and adjudicators' decisions are final.

Applicants must be available on Saturday 17 April. Travel and accommodation will be provided, along with an adjudication fee of £250.

Job Requirements

Competent musicianship, including the ability to read and understand brass band scores.

Good judgement, including the ability to rank and categorise performances appropriately, and to apply certificate levels consistently across a section.

The ability to use IT in the adjudication process (Google Docs) and handle scores in digital format (provided in advance). It is compulsory to use the digital system provided in adjudicating this event, no scores will be provided on paper.

Excellent communication skills, including the confidence to speak to a live audience of young players, conductors and families when delivering public feedback.

The ability to enthuse and inspire young people.

Experience working with young people.

(Desirable) Knowledge and enthusiasm for the brass banding sector, including an understanding of the range of repertoire and instrumentation permitted at Youth Champs.

Good personal presentation.

Job Responsibilities

To provide clear and coherent verbal and written feedback to bands and conductors.

To deliver public verbal feedback at the end of each section, pitched appropriately for young performers and a live audience.

To provide advice and guidance on how ensembles can improve in a constructive way.

To award Certificate of Achievement levels, placings and soloist awards consistently and transparently, without the use of numerical scores.

To ensure a fair outcome to the competitive elements of the event.

To work to the timings of a busy contest day, returning results and written feedback to the Youth Champs team promptly.

To engage with the positive and collaborative ethos of the Youth Champs and represent BBE's education arm.

To follow BBE's Safeguarding policy and safeguarding briefing for the event.
