Job Summary

We are looking for Rights & Contracts Officer to join the BFI on a 12 month fixed term contract, focussing on Replay 2 (the updated BFI National Archive online platform).

Job Description

  • To negotiate and secure renewals and agreements with the Regional and National Film Archives for BFI platforms.

  • To negotiate and secure renewals and agreements for the renewal of BFI National Archive titles for BFI platforms.

  • To generate reports and summaries as requested and enter agreement terms on the Rights and Royalties database and other BFI databases as required in a timely manner and to ensure that terms and exploitation are captured accurately.

  • Carry out copyright and rights research and 'due diligence' and record rights information on BFI databases in line with BFI data standards and to create and maintain clear and comprehensive files, summaries and reports relating to such research.

  • Using the rights and royalties database and other BFI databases and systems to provide detailed reporting, analysis and reports on the status of negotiations and rights renewals.

  • To respond to rights queries and any other related rights and contracts enquiries, both internal and external, where appropriate.

  • Keep accurate electronic and paper files with all relevant documentation related to all contractual negotiations.

  • To provide regular updates and project reports to key leads, managers and directorates as required.

  • To attend project and team meetings as required.

  • To work as a member of the Rights and Contracts and Heritage Programmes team, to undertake training and perform such other tasks as required.

Job Requirements

  • Demonstrable knowledge of: copyright law and principles, film and television rights and contracts (including music and guild or union matters), working with other IP rights, rights clearance and research.

  • An understanding of potential copyright, licensing and risk issues with mass digitisation.

  • Strong research skills; ability to formulate and carry out an effective search strategy.

  • Good level of facility with MS Office applications and experience of creating and editing structured data in tools such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, ideally with some use of bulk data processes.

  • Proven experience of using a rights database or cataloguing system and recording and or correcting information in such systems.

  • Understanding of Digital Preservation practices and their application to audio visual media - would be an advantage.
