The REFRAME: Inspire Schools Project gets students working collaboratively with Artist-Facilitators to produce a series of digital 'zines', weaving graphic design, visual art & digital skills to create their own digital material, using iPads. This project aims to inspire young people to take a creative subject for GCSE.

This project is part of a bigger partnership between Midlands Arts Centre (Birmingham), Southbank Centre (London) & Factory International (Manchester) that develops creative digital programmes for secondary school students.

We are looking for an experienced artist-facilitator able to empower young people to harness their own creativity through a series of school workshops.

About the project

  • ÂŁ250 day rate, anticpated to include 40 - 45 days.
  • The project is free for schools to take part in & will take place from Autumn 2025.
  • Over the course of 5 full day workshops, seven participating schools will create their own zine, using iPads & introducing the principles of graphic design.
  • Class zine should showcase a variety of art forms.
  • Each zine will be a group project, developing skills in literacy, design, IT & citizenship.
  • Students will get to use iPads & design software to create their zines.
  • CPD for teachers, along with resource materials, will be available.

The lead Artist-Facilitator will take their creative brief from Southbank Centre's 75th anniversary year.

The role will

  • Research & plan an exciting set of workshops inspired by the brief.
  • Deliver a schedule of workshops at schools in the Autumn & Spring term 25/26 with one Year 8/9 class of young people from each school. Each class will have five full day of workshops working with the schools' timetable.
  • Ensure that the students create a collaborative class zine, exploring the set themes.
  • Ensure zines are collated to form an online exhibition.
  • Working with MAC staff, deliver a celebration event at MAC for the students to attend in Spring 2026.

Job Requirements

Essential
- Excellent delivery skills to teach interdisciplinary creative sessions.
- Ability to connect with young people and facilitate a space within a school
- A graphic design practice or similar. Able to incorporate a range of other art forms such as poetry, creative writing and illustration.
- Experience of using digital technology as part of your creative practice.
- Reliable, collaborative, and able to work as part of a team.
- Excellent planning and organisational skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding young people.
- Based in the Birmingham/West Midlands.

Desirable
- Experience of delivering workshops with young people using digital technology.
- Experience delivering projects with young people with Special Educational Needs.
- A car user with access to a vehicle.
- Enhanced DBS certification (MAC can organise if not)
