Job Summary

Do you have a passion for video and live performance? GSA is seeking an experienced Performing Arts Technician (Video & Digital) to join our Technical Team within the Operations and Events Department at the University of Surrey.

Job Description

In this specialist role, you will support the delivery of GSA's diverse programmes, with a particular focus on theatre productions, technical lectures, and live events. Working collaboratively with academic staff, professional colleagues, and students, you'll help realise high-quality productions while sharing your expertise to develop the next generation of theatre professionals.

You will play a key role in delivering:

  • GSA productions and public performances
  • Specialist technical support for lectures across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
  • Research events and student society activities
  • Open days, conferences, lectures, and a variety of School and University events

Our technical team provides equipment support, mentoring, maintenance, and expert guidance across all activity areas. Delivering an exceptional student experience is at the heart of everything we do.

About You
You'll bring professional experience in a video department within live performance, theatre, events, or a related field, ideally with some experience in a conservatoire or higher-education environment.

Job Requirements

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Strong knowledge of current practices and techniques in professional theatre and live entertainment
  • Excellent administrative, organisational, pastoral, and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to supervise, mentor, and support students and freelance staff
  • Confidence managing equipment, budgets, and maintenance processes
  • Experience of video projection and mapping within live theatre or performance contexts would be advantageous.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and a commitment to safe, inclusive working practices

Job Responsibilities

  1. Support students and creative teams in the design, planning and realisation of technical set-ups and installations, including video & camera facilitation and related work. Work in collaboration with in-house and freelance video designers, DOPs and the creative team providing guidance and technical expertise to help students carry out set-ups effectively and support video designers in achieving their creative aims.
  2. Assist technical lecturers in delivering modules by providing equipment and demonstrating its use to students.
  3. Support students and freelance staff in the use of video & camera equipment for GSA programmes and productions through supervision, demonstration, and mentoring.
  4. Manage, maintain, diagnose, and repair all GSA video & camera equipment and consumables, including the equipment booking system, ensuring safe and compliant use in line with University Health and Safety policies.
