Job Description

Music of Life programmes have been designed, developed and delivered by leading UK music and education practitioners. The teacher training programme will be led by musicians who have accumulated unique experience in working with students with various special needs. The training programme includes consultations with experienced SEN/D practitioners.

Leading choirs at special needs schools will cover themes including but not limited to:

  • Teaching simple songs

  • Modifying and developing existing songs so they are accessible to all students
  • Programming a term of work

Our choirs in special needs schools project is led by:

Suzzie Vango(http://www.suzzievango.com - www.suzzievango.com)

Shivani Rattan (London Schools - http://shivanirattan.com - shivanirattan.com)

As a result of this training you will:

  • Gain experience in running vocal workshops with young learners with disabilities
  • Be able to deliver workshop content alongside an accompanist and other team members
  • Be able to adapt music when necessary to ensure the whole group can join in and benefit from the musical experience
  • Learn a mix of engaging repertoire that is suitable for a wide variety of abilities
  • Develop a supportive approach to music-making, ensuring the whole room is engaged in the activity
  • Be fully up to date with safeguarding policies
  • Have experience in working in a variety of school environments (small/large groups of young learners with physical, educational and emotional needs)
  • Be able to work alongside teachers and encourage staff to participate

You will be required to attend weekly sessions in our Brent schools for the Spring term 2026. These sessions are held on Mondays in term time. You will attend the sessions for 3 hours each Monday (total 30 hours for the project).

Job Requirements

Essential:

  • Have experience in running vocal workshops or teaching individuals.
  • Be a confident singer, either having studied singing to a high standard (degree or postgraduate) or be performing at a high level
  • Have the flexibility in their own timetable to attend weekly workshops in the Midlands (our workshops are run on Mondays around Brent between 10:00-14:30)
  • Be enthusiastic about educating others and passionate to want to get the best out of people

Desirable:

  • Have some experience of working in a team to make music
  • Have some experience of working in a school environment
  • Have a current up to date DBS certificate

Preference for people with experience of:

  • Working with young people in an educational context, who have a passionate belief in the contribution music can make to students' development and well-being
  • Having a personal experience of disability; caring for a disabled child as a parent or carer - who understands the need from the users' perspective

Job Responsibilities

Trainees will attend ten weekly sessions per term with the Music of Life team in schools on Mondays. Each session last 60 minutes. Trainees will be initially joining in, learning the music alongside the students and making notes with a discussion/debrief with Shivani Rattan and the team about teaching methods, asking any questions. Eventually, if appropriate and if the trainee is comfortable, they will begin to lead a small part of the session such as a warmup or a simple song with this role growing as time goes on. There will be continuous feedback after sessions.

There will be a one to one online support session with Shivani Rattan or another team leader provided during the term.

Throughout training, all trainees will be paid £50 for each session that they travel to, this is to cover any expenses incurred.

NB: All trainees need to have appropriate DBS clearance for any live sessions - this can be arranged by Music of Life, if necessary.
