Job Summary

Cast, Doncaster’s flagship performance venue, is looking for a Head of Creative Programme to join our senior management team. This new role will realise an ambitious programme of presented performances in our various spaces, as well as be responsible for producing our various in house productions.

Job Description

Programming & Producing

  1. Lead on the strategic programming for our mid and small scale spaces in discussion with the Director.
  2. Undertake contractual negotiations and discussions with the visiting companies and hires to reach targets
  3. Calculate and evidence risk taking decisions when booking shows that have a significant financial value attached to them
  4. Be financially and commercially astute
  5. Be responsible for leading on the production and the development of the annual in-house pantomime and other in-house produced work
  6. Manage the Associate Artist programme and any strategic talent development partnerships.

Leadership & Management

  1. Take a leadership role as part of the senior management team, with co-responsibility for development of policies, strategic vision and decision making.
  2. Make swift operational decisions when required, particularly when other members of the team are absent, to ensure the smooth running of the organisation.
  3. Provide leadership to facilitate and enable local cultural objectives.
  4. Co-manage the administrative function to ensure that production and programming paperwork is completed.

Internal Relationships & Communication

  1. Attend board meetings and funder meetings and produce reports to update on artistic development as required.
  2. Work closely with the Participation dept
  3. Ensure good communication about artistic programme within the building.

External Relationships & Communication

  1. Develop relationships with Doncaster's cultural networks and artists.
  2. Represent Cast at cultivation and other inhouse events as required.
  3. Represent Cast at local, regional and national meetings as required and keep abreast of industry innovations.
  4. Build partnerships with a range of organisations and individuals.
  5. Be alert to fund-raising opportunities for the creative development of the programme submitting funding applications as and when required.
  6. Keep up to date records and monitor all work undertaken to report outcomes to funders.

Job Requirements

Essential experience:

Experience of developing programming strategy for small scale and mid scale spaces

Experience of producing and managing contracts for touring productions

Experience producing small and mid scale theatre based work and negotiating co-productions and co-commissions

Proven experience of managing production and project budgets

Demonstrable ability to think strategically and creatively, contributing to Cast's long term artistic vision

A track record in introducing new strands of work, evaluating and calculating artistic risk

Extensive range of contacts with promoters, agents and companies producing live performance work.

Skills and knowledge:

An understanding of how to balance different types of programme

Public speaking and presentation skills

Financially astute

Able to think strategically and creatively

Excellent interpersonal skills

Strong organisational skills

Understanding principles of effective line management

Good understanding of UK theatre sector.
