Job Summary

The Gallery Manager works closely with the Associate Director of Operations and the Gallery Director. You are responsible for the gallery technician and the upkeep of the gallery spaces and offices. You will oversee the installation, deinstallation and presentation of artworks.

Job Description

General

  • Manage all technical operations and requests, delegating to the gallery technician and freelance technicians to complete tasks efficiently, to a high standard and in timely manner.
  • Work closely with the Associate Director: Operations on team management and scheduling.
  • Manage the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, art fairs, viewing rooms and photography in coordination with the ops team and working with both the artists and wider gallery staff. Ensuring effective communication and collaboration throughout.
  • Manage and book freelance technicians working closely with Associate Director: Operations & Registrar.
  • Support the Registrar team with any practical aspects of art handling, installing artworks as well as receiving works to the gallery and preparing them for outward collection and delivery.
  • When required support Registrar team with condition checking .
  • Have a strong understanding of safe handling and packing of various types of artworks, maintaining a high standard across the team working alongside the registrar department to always ensure artwork safety.
  • Support the team in Naples with their exhibition programme, providing technical assistance when necessary.
  • When required deliver and install artworks to clients or to other offsite locations.
  • Working with the gallery Artists for technical assistance and when required assisting with matters of production both on site and at artist studios as required.
  • Produce and sign off sketch ups for exhibitions, viewing rooms, plinths and other fabrication obtaining approval on any associated costs.
  • Manage and produce installation guides.
  • Ensure all artwork, exhibition and installation documentation are saved in a timely manner and updated including artwork locations.
  • Manage stock of all packing material and vital supplies for technical activities to take place.

Job Requirements

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Minimum of three years' experience as an Art Handler/Gallery Technician/Manager
  • Excellent AV skills
  • Ability to forward planning and proactive attitude
  • Excellent technical skills and thorough understanding of packing and handling requirements
  • Focused, reliable, and exacting attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Evidence of excellent problem-solving skills
  • General practical gallery skills
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and delegate as necessary

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • Good IT skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of contemporary visual art
  • Knowledge of Sketchup
  • Knowledge of H&S regulations and best practice

Job Responsibilities

Thomas Dane Gallery is looking for an experienced Gallery Manager at its London Gallery. The Gallery Manager is central to the operations of the gallery. We're looking for a highly self-motivated person, attentive to details. They will take a personal and thorough responsibility for the appearance and smooth running of the gallery buildings and operations. Our ideal candidate will have at least 3 years' experience of working in the art sector. You will be knowledgeable and confident in all aspects of art handling, installation and production of artworks. You will be an articulate communicator, remaining calm under pressure, have excellent technical skills and thorough understanding of packing and handling requirements. You will have excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills and the ability to develop positive working relationships with artists, colleagues, suppliers and clients.
