Job Summary

Scala is a new arts centre opening in October 2026. We are looking for a Director of Operations (Deputy Chief Exec), a key member of the Senior Management Team, working closely with the Chief Executive & Artistic Director to shape and deliver Scala’s strategic vision and business plans.

Job Description

Director of Operations will be a key member of the Senior Management Team at Scala, working closely with the Chief Executive & Artistic Director to shape and deliver Scala's strategic vision and business plans. The postholder will oversee the delivery of technical resources, customer services, commercial, IT, health and safety, and environmental sustainability.

  • Post Title: Deputy Chief Executive / Director of Operations
  • Responsible to: Chief Executive / Artistic Director
  • Responsible for: Operational staff - Duty Managers, Cafe, Bar, Box Office
  • Contract type: Permanent
  • Hours: Full-Time to include evenings, weekends and some Bank Holidays
  • Salary: £50k
  • Holidays: 25 days a year plus Bank Holidays
  • Place of work: Scala Worcester, Angel Place

Job Requirements

Core Requirements

  • IOSH or equivalent Health & Safety qualification (Scala will support postholder to obtain if notalready)
  • Personal Licence Holder (Scala will support postholder to obtain if not already)
  • At least 5 years' experience of senior and commercial management within a multi-functional venue, or comparable environment
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing commercial business plans
  • Experience of business planning, budgeting, and risk management at organisational level
  • Demonstrable experience of improvingefficiency and cost-effectiveness of operational services whilst maintaining service quality
  • Experience of procurement, tendering, and contract management, including estates and property management
  • Experience of leading building and Health & Safety in a public venue
  • Strong understanding of financial management, P&L responsibility, and income generation in a charity or not-for-profit context
  • Knowledge of EPOS, CRM, resource planning, accounting systems.

Job Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Support and deputise for the CEO & Artistic Director in the strategic leadership and management of the organisation in relation to all day-to-day matters, excluding artistic direction.
  • Lead the day-to-day delivery of all operational matters across the organisation.
  • Represent Scala externally with key stakeholders and partners, building strong strategic and commercial relationships to enhance Scala's profile in the sector and region.
  • Leverage partnerships that lead to innovation and growth of Scala's commercial activities.
  • Lead the development and delivery of Scala's trading activities including the establishment of a subsidiary if required by the Board.
  • Provide expert advice to the Board on operational, commercial, compliance, and risk matters
