The Auckland Project is seeking an experienced Curator to join our passionate and committed team, taking responsibility for the Auckland Palace site.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be a confident storyteller and excellent communicator, with experience of developing interpretation within a museum or heritage setting. The role will focus on creating high-quality audience-focused content for Auckland Palace, including temporary exhibitions and displays, digital projects, social media, tours and events.

As part of a small curatorial team, we work creatively and collaboratively, supporting each other as we seek ways to engage with new audiences and increase access to the collection. Whilst the role is focussed on Auckland Palace, we expect the successful candidate to contribute to the delivery of programmes across our sites. The role will suit a flexible, adaptable and self-motivated individual.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • To take lead responsibility for the presentation and interpretation of Auckland Palace and its collections, to further develop and sustain a high quality, memorable visitor experience that meets audience needs.
  • To take lead responsibility for the research, development, delivery of permanent and temporary displays within Auckland Palace, and contribute to the exhibition programme across other The Auckland Project's sites as required.
  • To support the Collections Team in the management of aspects of the care, preservation and documentation of the collections associated with the Palace.
  • To advise and support the Head of Curatorial and Head of Collections in relation to the potential for acquisition of items for the collection and archive through auctions, private sale or donation

Job Responsibilities

  • To foster relationships with external stakeholders, partners and academic advisors to further understanding of the site and collections, develop displays, and promote the Palace and its history.
  • Support the training and development of the Visitor Operations workforce, including creation of briefing materials and other resources to share the stories of the Palace and collections.
  • To supervise the work of staff and volunteers to maintain room settings within the Palace during the annual conservation period, working alongside the Preventative Conservator.
  • To actively seek opportunities to increase access to Auckland Palace and the collection, supporting delivery of the Access Plan.
  • To support the provision of learning and engagement activities, in particular development of the family offer at Auckland Palace.
  • To contribute to the events programme, shaping a series of talks and special events in collaboration with the Head of Events and Programming.
