Description

Job Summary

We’re looking for a brilliant Assistant Director to help bring our main-stage community production to life, taking place 9–11 April 2027. Rehearsals will take place from January 2027. As a theatre built by and for the community, community productions are at the heart of what we do.

Job Description

As a theatre built by and for the community, community productions are at the heart of what we do. They bring people of all ages from across Huddersfield and Kirklees together to tell incredible stories, giving local people the opportunity to perform on our stage in a fully produced show. Our previous productions have reimagined classic plays and stories with a distinctive Lawrence Batley Theatre twist. Find out more here.

As Assistant Director, you'll work closely with the Director to bring their creative vision to life, supporting rehearsals through warm-ups, exercises and rehearsal notes. You'll help create an inclusive, welcoming environment for our diverse, mixed-age cast, working with the Participation team to meet access and support needs. You'll also contribute to planning and production meetings, assist with costume, prop and chaperone arrangements, and help ensure safeguarding procedures are followed.

Job Requirements

We are looking for someone with:

Experience in directing, assistant directing or facilitating theatre rehearsals, through professional, community or voluntary work.
Experience working with community participants, young people or groups with varying levels of performance experience.
The ability to lead rehearsal activities and help performers develop their characters, confidence and performance skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient, encouraging and collaborative approach.
Good organisational skills, including taking clear notes, managing tasks and adapting to changing priorities.
A commitment to inclusive practice and an understanding of safeguarding when working with children and vulnerable participants.
The ability to work collaboratively with the Director, stage management and wider production team.
Availability for the agreed rehearsal schedule, production week and performances.

Job Responsibilities

On average 10 hours per week until the full time production week.
