Description

Job Summary

Public call for Artists Funded by Southwark’s Cleaner Greener Safer Programme

Job Description

Background and context

Through Southwark Council's 2024/25 Cleaner Greener Safer programme, funding has been allocated for the installation of a public Mural at Grove Vale, East Dulwich.

The proposed location is the gable wall of 1 Railway Rise that faces onto Grove Vale. This is a busy, vibrant area situated next to East Dulwich station and not far from Lordship Lane. There is a tradition of murals in the area and this project aims to be a positive addition. Primarily the younger residents who come from a wide variety of backgrounds use this pitch and the proposed artwork should reflect this. In everything we do as a council, we will seek to promote equality.

In Southwark, we value public art. Our culture team works with artists and the community to support the commissioning process and find out what residents want. We encourage an inclusive and anti-racist approach to public art commissioning. For more information please refer to our Public Art Policy (https://www.southwark.gov.uk/culture-and-sport/arts-and-culture/public-art - Public art | Southwark Council)

The proposal for commissioning a piece of public art came from a local resident who lives locally who hopes to see a positive impact on the area once the mural has been installed.

Stakeholders hope the artwork will reflect and celebrate the diversity of the local people and local area, brighten and illuminate the street, improve the aesthetics of the space and be part of the wider efforts to make Goose Green Cleaner Greener and Safer.

A panel of local residents and Southwark Council representatives will be responsible for selecting the artist and approving the final design.
