Description

Job Summary

The University of Leeds wishes to appoint an experienced Activity Plan Consultant (which may be an individual consultant or consultancy organisation) to lead the research, planning and development of a series of innovative engagement programmes for our community and partnership project.

Job Description

Our project will get people of all ages using and talking to each other about dialect. We will harness the power of dialect and local heritage to increase people's wellbeing and sense of pride in self, place and community across England. Working with a diverse range of partners and stakeholders from different sectors and complementary projects, libraries, museums and schools, we will deliver an ambitious programme of interactive public engagement events, co-created outreach activities, exhibitions, and creative commissions, informed by cutting-edge dialect research, and building on the successes of our recent work and assets. We will develop participation and education opportunities (citizen science dialect detectives, dialect surveys, digital storytelling, volunteering, training and skills-building, making and transcribing oral history recordings) for people from a range of backgrounds and age groups, including hard-to-reach audiences and those experiencing isolation. Responding to partners' needs and opportunities (including digitising complementary partner & community content), we will create accessible, inclusive digital and physical resources, informed by ongoing research, enabling people from all walks of life to explore and share their dialects and heritage on their own terms, stimulating dialogue between young and old, rural and urban communities and increasing sense of belonging. We will develop portable pop-up dialect 'handling' materials and kit; education, reminiscence and wellbeing resources and sharable toolkits, including training as appropriate and interactive web content. Touring exhibitions and pop-up events will enable us to bring the riches from the Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture (LAVC) - an important national dialects collection at the University of Leeds - to communities and to venues, large and small, across the country, where they can be complemented by material held by partner organisations.

Job Requirements

The Activity Plan Consultant will have substantial experience developing and delivering successful activity plans, audience development strategies and engagement programmes within heritage, museum, library, cultural or community settings. Applicants must demonstrate a strong understanding of The National Lottery Heritage Fund requirements and experience producing documentation that supports major funding applications. The successful candidate will possess excellent consultation, facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills, alongside experience undertaking audience research, needs analysis and programme evaluation. Expertise in public engagement, education, wellbeing, volunteer development and participation is essential, as is experience working collaboratively with community groups, heritage organisations and volunteers. Applicants should be able to design innovative learning and engagement programmes, realistic budgets and implementation plans, and integrate digital engagement.

Job Responsibilities

The Activity Plan Consultant will lead the development of a comprehensive Activity Plan, Action Plan and supporting documentation for the Delivery Phase application to The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Responsibilities include conducting audience, stakeholder and needs analysis; designing and facilitating consultations, focus groups and workshops; and testing engagement approaches through pilot activities across partner venues. The consultant will develop detailed plans for public engagement, learning and participation, volunteering, staff training, wellbeing and digital engagement, ensuring alignment with project aims and audience needs. They will produce a costed Volunteer Development Plan, contribute to sustainability and legacy planning, and create frameworks for volunteer recruitment, training and management. Please note this work is expected to take around 70 days but that this is indicative rather than prescriptive.
