The British Museum is looking to recruit a maternity cover to lead its flagship National Programme. The Dorset Foundation Head of National Programmes manages a vibrant programme of touring collections and sharing expertise, enabling people throughout the UK to engage with their national museum. It is an exciting opportunity to join the Learning and National Partnerships department and help shape the future of the National Programme, ensuring this work gains greater profile and recognition.

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for the strategic leadership of the National Programme, working in partnership with museums and other key agencies across the UK. You will work with curators and colleagues at both the British Museum and partner museums to develop a varied programme of touring exhibitions and spotlight loans, and a range of sharing expertise initiatives reaching trainees, colleagues and museum professionals. It is increasingly important that the National Programme connects closely with the work taking place at Bloomsbury, requiring close cross-departmental collaborations. The post holder will also feed directly into the future plans for the National Programme, working closely with the Head of Learning and National Partnerships to shape the vision for the programme.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have represented a museum or similar organisation at a senior level and overseen the delivery of large scale programming with experience of team management. With a degree in a relevant subject such as humanities, arts or community engagement, or equivalent, the successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of the UK museums sector and wider political framework; strong interpersonal skills; a broad knowledge of how objects can engage with the public and a network of UK museum contacts.
