EMCCAN seeks two “Carnival Artists In Residence”

September to December 2019 (part-time 1 day a week)

Salary £3,420 per artist – freelance contract + travel expenses

East Midlands Caribbean Carnival Arts Network seeks to employ two “Carnival Artist In Residence” to deliver a unique project funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Under their " EXPLORE and TEST" programme, you will look at one of two models of practice for carnival arts delivery in schools.  The project will influence policy and practice for Emccan's management, board and carnival artists.

One artist will explore the "Loose parts theory" in a Lincolnshire school working with disabled children and the other will take a "whole school national curriculum" approach to carnival arts delivery in a Derbyshire mainstream primary school. We will test different ways of working, which will inform policy and proactive for the future of carnival arts education programme, regionally and nationally.

You will report to the Project co-ordinator and feedback necessary research material to the collective findings.  The artists will be expected to travel to the Derby base at Derby West Indian Centre, Nottingham office at Sneinton Market, Derbyshire or Lincolnshire schools. Some work may be flexible and working from home is possible with prior arrangement.   Planning is crucial and attendance at team meetings will be required.

The project will run from September to December 2019 when we will culminate in a final sharing and compile findings and reports for overall evaluation.

Emccan is an umbrella organisation made up of four Caribbean Carnivals in the East Midlands; Nottingham, Derby, Northampton and Leicester.  It is a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) funded by Arts Council England and delivers four Caribbean Carnivals, a regional Costume competition, a UK Tour, a joint publication and other collaborative initiatives.
