£39,438.36 per annum, Full time (40 hours per week)

9 Month Fixed Term contract (Maternity cover)

The Royal Opera House aims to enrich people’s lives through opera and ballet. Home to two of the world’s great artistic companies – The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet, performing with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

We are seeking to recruit an Assistant HOD for the Men’s Workroom within the Costume Department on a fixed term maternity cover from March 2020. The post holder is responsible for providing cutting and sewing along with administrative and management support to the HOD to make costumes for either men or women for both Ballet and Opera productions.

As well as having BA/City and Guilds or equivalent in Costume Making/ Tailoring/ Fashion, our ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience of costume construction within a theatre environment, including fittings and the ability to prepare and pass work on.
  • Excellent knowledge of period and contemporary costume and cutting and construction of tailored garments.
  • Excellent and accurate hand and machine sewing skills, knowledge of different sewing machines and their maintenance, familiarity with sewing terminology and techniques.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with excellent time management and able to work to deadlines.
