Artist in Residence, St Albans Cathedral

Description

St Albans Cathedral is inviting applications for a summer residency for a creative artist with experience in community engagement.

The Cathedral is undergoing a £7-million major development project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will reveal the importance of Britain’s first saint, Alban, and raise the profile of the Cathedral built in his honour. As part of this ambitious project, we have been developing a number of activities designed to attract new audiences and to engage with existing audiences in innovative and exciting ways. We are therefore seeking an Artist in Residence who is able to engage with the history and architecture of the building creatively, and who can put engagement with the community at the heart of their residency.

As the walls of the Cathedral bear the marks of numerous historical ‘graffiti’, some stretching back to the sixteenth century, we wish for this residency to be particularly focused on the theme of ‘graffiti art.’ Beyond this requisite, however, we welcome all proposals which engage both with this theme and with the community, in particular with families and children.

Artist Residents Will Be Offered:

  • A residency of negotiable length during August 2018
  • A professional fee of £2000 (including all travel and accommodation), which is to cover 75 hours’ work over a period of 2-4 weeks during August
  • Additional budget of up to £1500 for all associated costs (e.g. materials and events)
  • Supported access to the Cathedral building and its archive
  • Publicity and promotion via the Cathedral’s communication and social media channels
  • Support in engaging with the local community
  • Flexible working hours
  • A space outside the Cathedral building to work in and store materials for the month of August

This residency is anticipated to be flexible, and we will work with the selected artist to identify specific needs according to their proposal.
